About Pwlldu Bay Beach

Pwlldu Bay is a small beach on the south Gower Peninsula coast in south Wales. It is one of the more remote beaches and is not easily accessible by car but there are three narrow footpaths leading down to the beach. There is a nearby gully called Grave’s End marked by a circle of limestone rocks. A number of people from a shipwreck that were found on the Bay were buried in this gully. The ship was the Caesar which was wrecked on the beach on 28 November 1760.

“This beach is quiet but beautiful. To reach it is a lovely walk down. You can park your car all day in the South Gower Rugby Club car park. The views are well worth the trek. However there is a sad history about the bay . In 1760 an Admiralty ship called the Ceaser was wrecked against the rocks . Most of the officers above deck survived, but the poor souls press ganged into the navy and held below deck lost not only their freedom but their lives. Locals who went to see what they could salvage from the ship discovered the bodies and buried them in a mass grave at Graves End they circled the grave with stones which can still be seen today this is a sad but true story. Don’t be put off the Gower coast is steeped in history and stunning and Pwll Du is awesome.”
